Seven wellbeing resolutions for 2020

Happy 2020! Not only is it a new year, but a new decade, which makes it the perfect time to instigate some wellbeing resolutions that you’ll want to keep for many years to come. To help you feel and look your best, here are seven New Year’s resolutions that will help you improve your skin, your physical wellbeing and your mental health.

Look after your insides for results on the outside

We say it a lot here at Verite – a happier gut means happier skin! Adding fresh, organic fruits, veggies and pulses into your diet along with probiotic-rich things like coconut yoghurt, kombucha and miso will help your gut microbiome to flourish. A healthy gut plays a big role in keeping skin conditions like acne, rosacea, dermatitis and psoriasis under control, as well as helping to manage other ailments like irritable bowel syndrome and allergies, and it can also help to improve your mood.

On top of eating the right things, being properly hydrated is also super important. It helps to lubricate your joints, carry oxygen around your body, keep your mind focused, digest your food and, of course, contributes to making your skin clear and radiant. If you don’t like drinking plain water, try herbal teas or freshly squeezed juice !

Always remove your makeup at night

It can be very tempting after a long, exhausting day to just fall into bed, but sleeping with your makeup on is terrible for your skin. Instead of letting your skin rejuvenate overnight, it’ll trap oil and other debris, causing them to clog your pores and encourage breakouts. What’s worse, it will increase the rate of environmental oxidative damage that prematurely ages your skin – in other words, it could give you wrinkles! Plus, particles of mascara can rub off in your sleep and get into your eyes, causing irritation. Sleeping with your mascara on can also cause your lashes to become dry and brittle, and in the worst case, fall out!

Treat your skin

It’s been around on Instagram and Twitter for a couple of years, but it’s such a great idea that it’s still going strong - #maskmonday is a wonderful way to make Mondays a little more enjoyable, and give your face some extra TLC. Facial masks help to remove impurities from the skin, balance and hydrate, increase circulation, brighten, smooth and nourish. Cut out the chemicals

Make a resolution to detoxify your home in 2020. If you’re concerned about harmful synthetic chemicals in your everyday cleaning and personal care products, and the effect they’re having on your body, try swapping them for natural alternatives. Some of the main nasties you should eliminate are parabens, phthalates, Triclosan, sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), sodium laureth sulfate (SLES), formaldehyde and propylene glycol. These chemicals have been found to cause everything from irritation and allergies to hormone disruption and, in some cases, have been associated with a higher risk of cancer. Ideally, you should opt for natural, organic, plant-based products that haven’t been tested on animals. Start your home detox with the products that you leave on your skin (like your skincare and makeup) and then work your way outwards to include things like shampoo, body wash, laundry detergents and household cleaning products.

Start a gratitude journal

If you want to take a simple yet powerful step to improve your mood, you could try keeping a gratitude journal. It’s a way of practising mindfulness and focusing on life’s positives. A gratitude journal doesn’t have to involve a lot of work – you simply commit to writing down a few things each day that made you thankful. You can decide how long your daily list should be, what time of day you write in your journal, and how you record your thoughts. They don’t have to be big things – just the fact that it was sunny or that the traffic lights stayed green when you were in a rush can be events you decide to write down. The act of putting them on paper (or screen) gives them more power than the negative thoughts you’ve had during the day. Research suggests that writing down positive events can help you feel happier and less stressed, improve your self-esteem, and give you a better night’s sleep.

Make time for meditation

Another fantastic way to reduce your stress levels is to meditate. Meditation has also been found to help with anxiety, concentration, sleep, pain levels, and can even lower blood pressure. Research has shown that regular meditation actually rewires the brain to focus less on self-referential thoughts (like worrying) and more on other areas. If you’ve never meditated before, try this beginner’s activity. Sit or lie somewhere comfortable, close your eyes, and concentrate on your breath. Do it for a few minutes without letting your mind wander. Once you get used to switching off like this, you can try more advanced techniques and longer sessions. There are some excellent guided meditation apps and videos available online.

Scent your world

Smell has a powerful effect on your brain and your sense of wellbeing. It stimulates your limbic system, which controls your emotions and can uplift, calm, and evoke strong memories. This year, try incorporating scent into your life to improve your stress levels, concentration and sleep, and purify the air you breathe.
